Website speed optimisation without code: 9 steps you can do yourself

Most slow sites have the same causes, and many are fixed without touching code. Here is what to do and in what order.

⏱️ Measure first

Open PageSpeed Insights, enter the address and look at the mobile result. Write down LCP, INP and CLS. Without a starting value you cannot tell whether something helped. What these terms mean is explained in the article on Core Web Vitals.

🪜 Nine steps without programming

  1. Shrink images. Compress them with a tool such as Squoosh before uploading and use WebP. See web images.
  2. Pick good hosting. A slow server cannot be sped up by add-ons. See choosing hosting.
  3. Delete plugins you do not use. Each adds code to every page.
  4. Enable page caching through one proven plugin or your host's settings.
  5. Enable lazy loading for images below the first screen (WordPress does this itself).
  6. Reduce fonts and weights. Two or three styles are enough.
  7. Avoid heavy sliders, animations and video backgrounds on the home page.
  8. Enable a CDN (for example free Cloudflare) if you have visitors from several countries.
  9. Update the site, theme and plugins.

⚠️ What does not work

  • Installing several "speed-up plugins" at once.
  • Turning on every option in a caching plugin without testing, which often breaks the site.
  • Chasing the number 100 at any cost.

🧪 When code is unavoidable

If your theme or page builder adds hundreds of kilobytes of needless code, the only real fix is a lighter theme or a hand-coded site. The comparison is in WordPress or a hand-coded website.

questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

How fast should a site load?

The main content should be visible in about 2.5 seconds or faster on mobile.

Does speed affect Google rankings?

It does, as part of user experience, and even more certainly it affects how many visitors stay and send an enquiry.

Do I need a paid caching plugin?

Often not. Many hosts offer server-side caching, and free plugins cover most needs.
