Mobile version and responsive design: what Google really expects

Google looks at the mobile version of your site as the main one. If it is poor, it is bad for rankings and for customers coming from phones.

📱 Mobile-first is not a fashion

For years Google has indexed and ranked pages primarily by their mobile version. That means content that exists only on desktop practically does not exist for the search engine. And customers most often see you for the first time on a phone, in town, in a rush, with one hand.

🧩 What responsive design is

One site, one address and one content that adapts to the screen size. It is not a separate "mobile version" on a separate domain, but a flexible layout that rearranges: three columns become one, the menu becomes a button, images scale.

✅ Checklist for the phone

  1. Text reads without zooming (base size around 16 px or more).
  2. Buttons and links are big enough for a finger and spaced apart.
  3. No horizontal scrolling.
  4. The menu is clear and easy to open.
  5. Phone, Viber and WhatsApp are one tap away.
  6. The form is short, with the right keyboard (number, e-mail).
  7. Images are adapted and do not push the content around.
  8. Pop-ups do not cover the whole content.
  9. The page loads quickly on a mobile network.

🔍 How to check

Open the site on a real phone, not only in a simulation. Look also at PageSpeed Insights for mobile and the usability report in Search Console. If you have content that is hidden on the phone, bring it back or show it another way, because what is not shown is weighed poorly.

🎨 Design from the small screen

The best results come from a "mobile first" approach: the small screen is designed first with what really matters, and then more is added for larger screens. That leaves only the essence. More on the approach on web design and in Core Web Vitals.

questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate mobile app?

For most businesses no. A good responsive site covers most needs.

What is AMP and do I need it?

AMP is no longer needed for ranking. A fast responsive site is enough.

How can I see how many visits come from phones?

In analytics and in Search Console, where results can be filtered by device.
