AI & the future of search

Optimising for AI chatbots and AI search: how to get recommended

More and more people ask AI assistants instead of searching. A clear, accurate and well-structured site has a better chance of being a source of answers.

🤖 What has changed

Besides classic results, Google shows AI overviews, and many people ask AI assistants directly. These systems summarise answers from sources on the internet and sometimes say where they took them from. The goal is not only to be first on a list, but to be a source that is used and mentioned.

Keep in mind that nobody outside the companies themselves knows exactly how they choose sources, and rules change. What is known from experience and documentation is a good foundation, and it overlaps with good SEO.

🧱 What helps

  1. Clear, accurate and useful content. A direct answer in the first sentences, no filler.
  2. Good structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables.
  3. FAQs with short answers. See FAQ section and SEO.
  4. Concrete facts: prices or ranges, deadlines, service areas, company name and the people behind it.
  5. Structured data that clearly describes the business, service and article. See schema markup.
  6. Authority and trust: author, experience, references, mentions elsewhere that are relevant.
  7. A fast and accessible site that bots can read without problems.
  8. Content in HTML, not only in JavaScript loaded later.

🕷️ Bot access

In the robots.txt file you decide which bots to allow. If you want AI systems to be able to cite you, do not block their search bots. Some sites also add an llms.txt file with a short overview of important pages. Its real benefit is not officially confirmed, but it does no harm and is easy to maintain. Our site has one.

📍 Local and service businesses

Questions like "who builds websites in Belgrade" or "a good dentist nearby" often get answers with a list of businesses. A tidy Google Business Profile, consistent data (name, address, phone) and reviews help, because answers often rely on these sources. See local SEO.

⚠️ What does not work

  • Texts written only to sound clever, without concrete data.
  • Mass-generated content without checking.
  • Promises of "guaranteed appearance in ChatGPT". Nobody can fulfil such a promise.

🧭 A practical plan

Start with the basics: a fast site, clear service pages, FAQ, schema and a Google profile. Then add expert articles on the questions customers ask. Measure visits from AI sources if analytics shows them, but do not expect precise numbers. More about the service on SEO optimisation.

questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO a replacement for SEO?

No. It is an upgrade. Good SEO is the foundation, and for AI you add clarity, facts and structure.

Can I forbid AI bots access?

You can through robots.txt, but then you reduce the chance that AI systems cite you.

How do I know whether AI mentions me?

Occasionally put your key questions to AI assistants and watch sources in analytics. Results change, so watch the trend.
